A Weekend Getaway to The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery in New Orleans

When headed to New Orleans, look beyond Bourbon Street and the French Quarter and instead explore one of the lesser known neighborhoods, such as the historic Warehouse District, and a stay at The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is the perfect way to rest, explore, and dine in trendy style.

This artsy, boutique hotel located just a quick 15 minute walk from the famed French Quarter is a dream property for travelers looking for a historic and experience forward stay—something a little bit different from the rowdy party scene. The hotel’s building dates back to 1854 with roots as a warehouse, which is fitting for its neighborhood. From a coffee warehouse to a chandlery (that is a candle maker just for chandeliers) the property has seen many aspects of New Orleans life. With the renaming of New Orleans city streets at the turn of the 20th century, the hotel today is named The Old No. 77 as a nod to its original warehouse address of 77 Tchoupitoulas Street.

The hotel’s exterior evokes the New Orleans’ historic architecture, with gas lit lamps and wrought iron work and sweeping windows. Once you step inside, you are transported to a distinct warehouse feel with beautifully exposed brickwork, wooden beams, and tiled flooring. This aesthetic is pulled through to the guest rooms, which keep this design with high ceilings, large windows, and art sourced from local artists to connect to the neighborhood’s artistic community. While renovated and modern, the distinct history of the building cannot be missed.

The architecture and decor isn’t the only enticing aspects of this property; the on site experiences and options are top notch. With a history of a coffee warehouse, it is no surprise that they serve some of the most delicious oat milk lattes I had while in town, the cafe (Tout La) is in the lobby and available in the morning hours before setting out to explore the city. But, the real culinary draw is of course the James Beard Best Chef Nina Compton's wildly successful restaurant, Compere Lapin, which cannot be missed! And while here don’t forget to explore the artwork throughout the hotel, one would think they are in the middle of a trendy local gallery as all of the art throughout was commissioned and created by local New Orleans artists.

All in all, a weekend (or longer) at The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery should be at the top of your New Orleans travel list!
